Employment Opportunity

The Corporation of the Township of Alnwick/Haldimand is currently looking to fill the following vacancy: Crossing Guard – Permanent Part-time.

The Crossing Guard will assist pedestrians travelling to and from school when crossing. Crossing Guards are expected to work the duration of the school year. The Crossing Guard position will be based in the Grafton area.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Report to assigned crossing at appointed times and maintain a professional demeanor with the public and school children.
• Observe safe gaps in traffic and assist students and pedestrians with safe crossings of roadways.
• Work in accordance with applicable Provincial and Municipal legislation including the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act, the Highway Traffic Act, and Township policies/procedures.
• Communicate with students & pedestrians and control motor vehicle flow using good judgement and clearly displaying a school crossing stop sign until all persons have cleared safely.
• Wear mandatory safety equipment at all times while on duty as supplied by the Township.
• Inspect crossing intersection daily, report and document all concerns and/or incidents.

Qualifications & Skills

• Must be dependable and available for call in on short notice.
• Ability to stand/walk for long periods of time.
• Ability to exercise good judgement and work independently and unsupervised.
• Excellent customer service and strong communication skills.
• Positive, courteous and professional interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
• Ability to hold up a school crossing stop sign above shoulder height for extended periods.
• Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act and Highway Traffic Act.
• Must obtain and maintain a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check.

Hours of Work

This position is expected to work for the duration of the school year. Hours will be 8:15am - 9:15am & 3:15pm – 4:15pm (2 hours/day). Hours may vary based around school operations. This position will start as soon as possible.

Compensation

The pay rate for this position is $21.15 (January 1, 2026 Wage rate CUPE 5574).
